WILLIE REVILLAME

WILLIE REVILLAME
Willie Revillame (born Wilfredo Buendia Revillame, January 27, 1961), is a Filipino game show host, singer and comedian. Revillame currently hosts the noontime game show Wowowee.

He was discovered by Randy Santiago who made him a sidekick in his GMA 7 show, Lunch Date in 1986. He appeared in several movies before he married Princess Punzalan, the daughter of Helen Vela.

He was suspended twice in ABS CBN noontime shows which co-hosted with John Estrada and Randy Santiago.

In August 1999, Randy, John and Willie were suspended by ABS-CBN from Magandang Tanghali Bayan because of the vulgar jokes that were vulgar that they threw at the contestants that joined the contest during the show's portion Calendar Girl. The suspension was meted after MTRCB, then headed by Armida Siguion-Reyna, issued a warning on ABS-CBN regarding MTB. A week later, the whole noontime show was suspended and was replaced temporarily by Esep-Esep.

In 2001, Willie was terminated from Magandang Tanghali Bayan after he defied orders from ABS-CBN management to refrain from making vulgar jokes. He was replaced in the show by the matinee-idol triumvirate of Marvin Agustin, Dominic Ochoa and Rico Yan†. Soon after, he started appearing as guest star in some GMA 7 shows, fuelling speculations that he will soon be transferring to ABS-CBN's rival network. But after guesting at GMA 7, there was no news coming from Willie's camp except for his appearance during an EDSA 3 rally.

When Magandang Tanghali Bayan went off air, it made a comeback with a different title Masayang Tanghali Bayan with almost the same group, plus new hosts. Then in December 2003, the MTRCB ordered ABS-CBN to terminate Willie from the show, when he remarked nasty jokes with Masayang Tanghali Bayan mainstay Mahal, but before the order could be carried out, the host-comedian filed his resignation instead, banging the midget actress right after. In January 2004, Willie appeared on ABS-CBN's The Buzz and made a tearful farewell appearance full of tears.

Annulment case

On July 16, 2007, Revillame was charged before a Quezon City court (Criminal Case No. Q-07-147787) for allegedly abusing his estranged wife, Floralice "Liz" Almoro. Prosecutor Gibson Araulla Jr. recommended P 12,000 bail after he found that Revillame violated Section 5, RA 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act. Almoro alleged that Revillame a) humiliated and shouted words of encouragement at her while he was holding their baby boy, b) that sometime May 2006, he allegedly tried to file her face off with a nail file and that c) he had "dirty sexual affairs'" with different men and women. In his counter-affidavit, Revillame denied the charges claiming that he had difficulty performing his duty as husband allegedly because of Almoro’s explosive moods and hurtful tirades.
While his Wowowee co-host Janelle Jamer stated that she was never pregnant by Revillame, since there were rumours that she was slim due to an alleged abortion.

Willie has three daughters from previous relationships. One of his daughters, Meryl Soriano, is an actress. On August 27, 2007, Willie's daughter Meryl gave birth to a baby boy named Elijah. It was Meryl's firstborn with ex-husband, actor Bernard Palanca and officially Willie's first grandchild.

BERTING LABRA

BERTING LABRA

He was the "Mickey Rooney and Bobby Breen of the Philippines," the Pinoy version of Hollywood Child Wonders in the 1940s.

For the late Action King Fernando Poe Jr., Berting Labra was "the greatest Filipino actor of all time"—equally adept in comedy and drama, in action flicks and musicals.

"He was a child of the movies," said Boots Anson-Roa, head of Movie Workers' Welfare Foundation (Mowelfund), of which Labra was a beneficiary.

According to the film web site IMDb, Labra, who succumbed to emphysema on Tuesday morning, appeared in 111 movies and TV shows—several of which co-starred the two Poes of local cinema, Fernando Sr. and FPJ.

Born April 17, 1933, Labra as child star shared the screen with the elder Poe in several hits, including "Palaboy ng Tadhana," "Sagur," "Kanto Boy," and "Alimudin."

In one of his last interviews, he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in 2005 that the elder Poe was his discoverer.

"He was looking for a boy who could sing," Labra recalled. "He remembered me from Paquito Bolero's stage shows during the Japanese Occupation."

He was only 6 when he made his stage debut. At that tender age, he also witnessed the murder of his father, Francisco Labra, former bantamweight and featherweight champion of the Orient, in the hands of Japanese soldiers. "He was tortured," he told the Inquirer. "His hands were bound with barbed wire.")

The elder Poe became the 10-year-old's surrogate father. "He was a man of few words," related Labra. "But he was my barkada. He often treated me to lunch in Chinatown."

Five years after the elder Poe's death, Labra, then a teenager, teamed up with FPJ in the 1956 box-office hit "Lo' Waist Gang," a film that spawned a string of sequels and a life-long friendship with Da King.

The younger Poe's daughter, Mary Grace Llamanzares, recalled that the remaining members of the "Lo' Waist Gang," along with family and friends, gathered at the Gloria Maris Restaurant in Greenhills last month for what turned out to be a final reunion.

"Tito Berting was there, with Tony Cruz, Butch Bautista, my mom (Susan Roces) and Manay Ichu Vera-Perez," Llamanzares recalled. "There's only a few of them left. I'm glad we got together that night."

In the 2005 Inquirer interview, Labra recounted, with more than a tinge of pride, that he was instrumental in the courtship and eventual marriage of Llamanzares' popular movie star-parents. "Ako ang tulay (I acted as bridge)," he related.

"Maybe my dad (who passed away in 2004) and Tito Berting are now bonding in heaven, with other friends who went before them," Llamanzares noted.

Roces told the Inquirer: "I can't put into words the sadness and loss I feel over the death of a family friend. It's like reawakening the past, but you know that those happy times are just a memory."

Caridad Sanchez first met Labra and FPJ in the 1950s. "He called me Ne, short for Nene, and I called him Berto."

Sanchez remembered, "Even if they had little misunderstandings, Berto and Ronnie (FPJ) were loyal to each other. Berto would take a bullet for Ronnie."

Leo Martinez, director-general of the Film Academy of the Philippines, said he is "extremely saddened" by Labra's passing.

Labra's last film, the 2007 comedy "M.O.N.A.Y. ni Mr. Shooli," co-starred Martinez.

"We met in the 1970s," Martinez recounted. "We worked in many TV shows and movies together. We became close because he loved telling stories between takes."

Amazing life

Indeed, Labra, who experienced amazing highs and devastating lows in his roller-coaster life, had plenty of stories to share.

In 1969, he and fellow action star Eddie Fernandez were jailed for murder. Labra spent 13 years in Muntinlupa, only to be exonerated by the Supreme Court. He harbored no bitterness in spite of the imprisonment and the damage it caused in his family life.

He told the Inquirer in 2005: "In prison, I felt God's presence in my life and saw things clearly."

Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr., who co-starred with Labra in the 1991 action film "Manong Gang," remembered Labra as "a natural comic who quickly turned serious in front of the camera. He was well-respected and will be missed by industry colleagues."

Revilla's father, action star Ramon Revillla Sr., also worked with Labra on the big screen. Said the younger Revilla: "Tito Berting was a simple and down-to-earth. Veteran stars like him are precisely the reason that Mowelfund and the Actors' Guild should be strengthened, so these organizations could continue helping marginalized movie workers."

Labra was buried in the Garden of Memories memorial park in Pateros Sunday.

JAIME DELA ROSA

JAIME DELA ROSA

Jaime dela Rosa with Charito Solis

Jaime de la Rosa was a Filipino pre-war and postwar actor better known as Jimmy in Philippine showbiz.

Tommy de la Rosa was the first screen name he used, later changing it to Jaime. Born in Lubao, Pampanga, he is the younger brother of Rogelio dela Rosa and became one of LVN Pictures's bankable star.

From Manila Bulletin:

Jaime was a native of Lubao, Pampanga, with Chinese and Spanish ancestry. His lolo was, in fact, one of Ferdinand Magellan's trusted lieutenant. But while of good stock, Jaime wasn t born rich.

However, the young Jaime had several aces up his sleeves. His brother, Rogelio was a famous actor, and sister Africa was a noted character actress. Then, there was his uncle, Gregorio Fernandez, an actor and film director who had a clout in the movie industry. With his inherent good looks, the stage was set for Jaime s entry to the entertainment business.

Jaime started his film career using the screen name Jimmy de la Rosa, during the late 30s. At about the same time, he was also studying Law. His first movie was Mga Anak ng Lansangan (1939) for Eastern Pictures. The next year, he did three films: Cadena de Amor , Bawal na Pag-ibig and Kahapon Lamang. And just before the outbreak of World War II, he was able to finish Ibong Sawi (1941) for Excelsior Pictures.

But even the war couldn't stop the wheel of Jaime's fortune. Instead of putting his life to a halt, he married Beatriz, his hometown sweetheart, and started a family.

After the war, Jaime resumed acting for LVN Pictures, starting with Garrison 13 in 1946, followed by his solo, Aladin (1947) and a string of many lead roles until 1958.

During his heydays, he was one of the most sought leading man. As such, he lent his lead status to female stars who were primed for stardom like Nida Blanca in Korea (1952), and Charito Solis in Nina Bonita (1955).

He also played as prince charming to Rosa del Rosario in the first Darna, and Edna Luna in the first Dyesebel (1953). But he also had his share of solo starrers, in films like Binatang Taring (1947), Satur (1951) and Shalimar (1951).

Among his many successful movies were Galawgaw (1952) with Nida Blanca, Waling Waling at Gitano (1948) with Rebecca Gonzales, Tanikalang Papel (1948) with Norma Blancaflor, No Money, No Honey (1956) with Carmencita Abad, Bagong Manunubos (1947), Hamak na Dakila (1948), Padre Burgos (1949), Anak ng Pulubi (1951), Taong Paniki (1952), Kabalyerong Itim (1952), Haring Solomon at Reyna Sheba (1952), Medalyong Perlas (1956) and Faithful (1958).

Jaime duplicated his film success on television, where he was among the pioneers, as host of ABS-CBN's Caltex Star Caravan.

And when he was no longer active in hosting and acting, Jaime ventured into TV directing and played as consultants to other filmmakers. In 1982, he was a liaison for the Australian opus, The Year of Living Dangerously. He also hosted a radio program on DZBB.

According to Cherry, one of Jaime s daughters, his father was an intellectual. He loved to read, and he was a good writer. He was a big thinker. In fact, it was Jaime who introduced the use of a film screen as set background for television productions.

Jaime was also credited for naming the local awards body as Filipino Academy for Movie Arts and Sciences or FAMAS, after the American Motion Pictures and Science (AMPAS) has protested the use of the originally proposed Academy of Motion Pictures and Science of the Philippines or AMPAS.

But who was Jaime dela Rosa behind the velvet curtain?

He was a protective father, says Cherry. And while he wasn't showy in his emotions, he had a way of making us feel that we re loved. Wala kaming curfew noon, but he wouldn't sleep until all his daughters were home. Hatid-sundo din niya kami while we were studying in La Consolacion.

Cherry also says that his father was wise in spending his money. He was the exact opposite of my mom. From buena familia kasi ang mama ko and she was used to a certain type of lifestyle. My mom kasi, pag nag-shopping, parang laging may giyera. For example, instead of buying one broom, my mom would buy a hundred. Kaya yung bahay namin sa Sampaloc, laging puno. At pag nagta-travel kami, lagi kaming overweight. Nakakatuwa nga because, isa sa huling habilin ng papa ko kay mom, was magtipid daw.

She continues, my father was fond of making investments, in real estate or in business. I recall that he used to plant all sorts of trees in his properties in San Mateo (Rizal) and Horsehoe Village. He was also a pioneer in the woodcraft export industry, when we were still living in Sampaloc.

Cherry also says that theirs was a happy home. Kasi sumasayaw at kumakanta din siya sa pelikula noon. So, palaging may ballroom dancing sa bahay. She is also proud that her dad remained faithful to her mother despite the temptations in showbiz. He didn't have another family. He would always go home to us every night.

According to Cherry, his dad was a man of varied interests. He had a dancing pony that he used to train to while his time. He also loved photography at mga toys. One time, when he went to Korea, he brought us — the three girls, a toy train. Looking back, I think he bought those toy trains for himself.

And while most of Jaime's time was spent in Manila, Cherry says that he stayed true to his kapampangan roots. He had a sweet tooth. And all his life, the Pampanga dishes remained his favorite. Yung buro, saka yung local exotic dish na insect, he loved those.

As a politician, Cherry admires her dad's tenacity and good will. Ayaw na ayaw niya yung mga abusadong tao. He didn't enrich himself when he was in politics. Ayaw niya sa mga corrupt.

Jaime dela Rosa died while serving as Vice Mayor of Manila. He was a fulfilled man, says Cherry, because he was able to achieve what he wanted in life. Of course, there were ups and downs, but he was able to fulfill his dreams.

Jaime dela Rosa died, ten years ago, this Sept 18, at the age of 72.

Shortly after his release from jail, he had reinvented himself as a versatile actor who can do justice to different film genres ranging from action to drama and comedy. After his comeback film, he opted out of his exclusive contract with Viva Films and was allowed to do movies for other film outfits including Star Cinema Productions, FLT Films , Millennium Cinema and GMA Films.

ERIC QUIZON

ERIC QUIZON- Biography

Eric is the tenth child of Dolphy. He is the brother of Epi Quizon and half-brother of Van Dolph and other Quizon siblings.

Eric admits that being Dolphy’s son has given him an edge in the business, but the younger Quizon proved his own merit earlier on in his career and easily eased himself out of the shadow of his popular father.

"When I was a kid, there were mean people who would call me ‘anak sa labas’ and I felt bad about it," Eric shares. "When you were young, you don’t understand it. But now that I’m older and wiser, I’m so happy and blessed to be Dolphy’s son. He’s always acknowledged me as his son and as long as he’s proud of me, I don’t care what other people will say anymore."

Aside from the features and acting genes that he took after his dad, Eric believes he also inherited his dad’s generous nature and benevolent way of helping other people. "People love to come to us with their problems," Eric says. "I help in whatever way I can. My dad always loves to help. He’s like that and he never expects anything in return."

From his dad, Eric has followed this piece of advice which has served him in good stead. "He always tells me, ‘Be yourself. Don’t pretend to be something that you’re not.’ Basically, I’ve abided with that piece of advice. It’s best for people to know who you really are or what you are and they know how they will accept you."

Eric cannot be thankful enough for all the good breaks that continue to come his way and for all the blessings he receives. "When I pray, I never ask for anything nor do I question God for anything that has happened in my life. I always pray for what He wants for me and if I deserve it, I’ll gladly accept it."
