EDU MANZANO

EDU MANZANO BIO

EDU MANZANO

Edu Manzano is a Filipino actor, comedian, and politician. He was born on September 14, 1955 as Eduardo C. Manzano in San Francisco, California. He had joined and served the US military for 4 years.

He was formerly married to actress and now governor of Batangas, Vilma Santos , for four years, which ended in a definite separation. They had a son, Luis Philippe Manzano , during their union. He is now the live-in partner of actress Rina Samson. He has a total of three children all in all, with Luis, Amanda Danielle, and Lorenzo.

He started his acting career during the late 70’s, and he still has not slowed down just yet. His last movie though was way back in 2003, concentrating more on his television career nowadays with game shows, soap operas, and sitcoms, but he is still on top of the market.

Manzano is currently the host of Pilipinas, Game KNB?. Initially, he replaced Kris Aquino for an indefinite period. However, in mid June 2007, ABS-CBN announced that he will permanently replace Kris Aquino for the show.

Manzano is the father of Philippine actor Luis Philippe Manzano and the former husband of Batangas governor Vilma Santos. He was once romantically linked with Edu Manzano.

He had been elected as president of Kapisanan ng mga Artista sa Pelikulang Pilipino, or KAPP for short, which is the Philippines’s actors’ guild, in 1995.

He is also active in politics, having been the vice mayor of Makati during the late 90’s. He is now the current chairman of the Optical Media Board, replacing Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. when he went on to run as a senator. Edu had considered running for senate himself during the 2007 Senatorial Elections, but he backed out despite the support of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, citing lack of funds as the reason for his retraction from the race.

Trivia

Son of actor, writer, director & producer, Efren Reyes, Sr. and Virginia Montes. Brother of actress, Cristina Reyes.

Nephew of Actors, Johnny Reyes and Tessie Quintana.

Grandson of writer, Pedrito Reyes.

Great Grandson of writer, Severino Reyes, A.K.A., Lola Basyang.

From Blast in the Past, Manila Bulletin

Overcome with grief as he stood beside his dad’s coffin, the orphaned son vowed to follow his father’s footsteps.

Perhaps, it was a desperate attempt by an eight-year-old boy to cling on to the memories of his beloved daddy. But the invisible bond between father and son was so strong, the child fulfilled his vow eleven years later when he decided to become an actor just like his famous dad.

Efren Reyes Jr. became a by-word during the early 80s when showbusiness geared to favor the sons and daughters of former superstars. Riding the bandwagon were Jay Ilagan, son of Corazon Noble & Angel Esmeralda, and Ace Vergel, son of Cesar Ramirez & Alicia Vergel.

At that time, Efren Jr., son of Efren Reyes Sr. and Virginia Montes was ripe for the picking — thanks to the innate gift of acting and an inherent good looks that mimicked his dad’s brawn.

In 1979, he was introduced in "Pangkat Do or Die" and launched into full stardom in "Anak ng Maton"(1980), an offshoot of his father’s big hit "Ang Maton" (1959).

"Actually, my first movie exposure was in "Ang Tatay Kong Kalbo," starring Teroy de Guzman. It was produced and directed by my dad. I was only about four or five then. Teroy was training for boxing. Biglang anggulo, ‘andon kami nung elder brother kong si Eric. I was surprised when I saw the film on TV," said Efren. "Tapos, nag-ring bearer pa ‘ko sa ‘Sakal o Kasal,’ also directed by my dad, starring Rebecca Quintana."

Efren entered showbiz at about the same age, when his father made it big. "Lahat ng kapatid n’ya, nagtapos, but my dad only finished high school. Kasi, rebelde siguro. While they were well-off, nag-telonero s’ya because he loved the movies. When he became famous, he was maybe 19 or 20.

"I entered showbiz when I was 18. After attending high-schoool at Aquinas, I enrolled for college. But immediately after enrollment, I was told that I would do a movie to be shot in Pampanga. So, I dropped all my subjects, kasi mahilig ako talaga. When the project didn’t materialize, it was too late for me to go back to school, to the dismay of my mom."

He continued, "I started doing bit roles for Agrix Films, kasi, nanay ko saka si Tita Lillian (Laing), taga-Agrix. As extra, I did "Coed," "Kampus," and "Dodong Diamond." My last movie as bit player was "Kadete."

"I was in Baguio, training for fencing, when I was called to do "Pangkat Do or Die." And then I did "Anak ng Maton" and "Siga" with Ace Vergel."

Looking back, he said in jest, "In my launching movie, I was paid a sum that would buy you a second-hand car." On a serious note, he said, "I knew that I have a future in showbiz, kasi doon nanggaling ang pinakain sa ‘kin ng nanay at tatay ko eh."

Like my father, I’m also fond of comedy. I wrote and directed "Sa ‘Yo Ang Itaas, Sa Akin Ang Ibaba" with Rita Magdalena and Izza Ignacio. I did that for only fifteen days and it made fourteen million in two weeks, here in Metro Manila," he said with pride.

When complimented on being a good story teller, he said, "Siguro lahi ko." After all, Efren is a fourth-generation artist. His great grandfather was the acclaimed playwright behind Lola Basyang and "Walang Sugat," Severino Reyes; his grandfather was Pedrito Reyes, author of Kulafu, the first colored adventure comic strip; and his dad was the first Asian Filmfest’s Best Actor awardee, not to mention his mother, who is also a good actress herself.

He said that he’s his own critic. "When I watch my own movies in the theaters, I would oftentimes scold myself for not making my acting better. ‘Naku, ba’t gano’n ang ginawa mo? I’m a perfectionist. So, if I want something right, I do it myself."

Efren tries to celebrate the achievements of his father any way he could. In "Sa ‘Yo Ang Itaas …", where he appeared in cameo role. He was Kapitan Berong, in obvious reference to one of his dad’s celebrated film character "Kapitan Berong (1953)."

"Idolo ko s’ya, s’yempre. I took the time to learn his works. You have to learn the past, before you can learn the future," he philosophized.

On growing up without a father, he said: "Sad. You look for a father figure anywhere you can. Fortunately, parang I have a better sense of myself. Naisip ko agad na lumalaki akong mag-isa."

"My father left us some properties, and my mother tries to raise us the best way she could," he said. "She loves me but ours is a love-hate relationship kasi matigas din ang ulo ko, just like my dad. Kaya naman nanggigigil yun."

Funny, how a person’s gestures could be replicated even if they didn’t spend much time with each other. Perhaps, it’s one of those life’s happy miracles. "Madalas, nakikita ko yung sarili ko sa kanya, when I watch his movies", said Efren. "May mga tirada s’yang, ‘Uy, galaw ko yun ah.’ Malikot din ang kamay nun eh."

Just like his father, Efren Jr. is known as a macho actor, who later turned to directing. But more than that is their admirable dedication to the acting craft. To his credit, Efren has already been cited for his fine acting in "Tatak ng Isang Api," "Delima Gang" and "Angel Molave." But his finest performance to date, according to critics, is in "Ang Babae sa Bintana" where he essayed the role of Richard Gomez’ gay benefactor — an exact anti-thesis to his tough image.

Efren is a man of varied interests. "When I’m interested in something, I study it intensively, even if I have to buy books," he said.

It is no surprise therefore that he is also into many things at present, like wine manufacturing, mining and running a school even.

"I’m the Administrator of Sacred Heart Institute in Muntinlupa City. It has a pre-school, elementary and high school. We will soon be offering adult high school. I’m also into manufacturing wine. I and a former school-mate are into turning exotic and endangered fruits into delectable wines. We have duhat, bignay, mango, guyabano and soon to come out, coconut and langka wines."

For all his years in showbiz, Efren is particularly proud that he has his pride intact. "Hindi ako gumagawa ng kalokohan na ikakasira ng name ng tatay ko, nanay ko at ako. Yun ang iniingat-ingatan ko," he said.

His only lament, as in all true artists, is the sad state of the local film industry. "That is my major heartbreak," he admittted. "To see an industry that I truly love dies."

SANDY ANDOLONG

SANDY ANDOLONG

picture of Sandy Andolong

Sandy Andolong was the true Filipina beauty
of her time. She is neither tall nor small. She is, in fact, 5'4" in
height. She has maintained her small frame, even now that she is mother to
five growing kids, the eldest of whom, Rafael Sandino, is now 20 years old.

Sandy is not so beautiful nor is she plain looking either. Once, a kibitzer
described her beauty as "tamang tama lang." The type that grows on you.

Sandy was armed with a degree in acting when she joined showbiz more than
two decades ago. She finished an acting course in a university in New York.
One of her mentors was the late director Ishmael Bernal, who included her
in the cast of almost all the movies he directed. One of Sandy's most
memorable films, as far as we are concerned, was "Kakabakaba Ka Ba?"
Bernal, of course, directed it.

Though Sandy never won an acting award, she's recognized as an actress in
the true sense of the word. She is the type of performer who delivers, so
to speak.

For a while Sandy concentrated on being a wife to actor Christopher de Leon
and a mother to their five children. Ian, Boyet's son by former wife, Nora
Aunor, lives in the same compound where his father's family lives.

Like his half-siblings, Ian fondly calls Sandy "Nanay." He used to call
Boyet "Daddy." Now, he addresses him as "Tatay."

Sandy is like a second mom to him, said Ian during an interview in
connection with his movie, "The Cory Quirino Kidnap, NBI Files." He said
she takes to him like her own son.

Now that their children are all grown up (the youngest, Mica, is six years
old), Sandy is back to acting.

Behind the scene, Bobot and Sandy, plus Johnny Delgado have formed a
closely-knit "family" of their own. Their friendship in real-life dates
back to when they were just starting their respective families. Bobot and
Johnny are good friends of Sandy's husband, Boyet. Their gag show, "Goin'
Bananas," was very popular in the '80s.

ALMA MORENO

ALMA MORENO BIOGRAPHY

picture of Alma MorenoAlma Moreno is a Filipino actress who has made her mark both as a popular movie and television personality. She was born Venessa Lacasamana on May 25, 1959 in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur to Frank Lacsamana and Jean Moreno, a couple who lived a simple, yet noble life.

She appeared in her first movie as a "dama" in "Urduja" with Amalia Fuentes. Her first starring role was "Ligaw na Bulaklak Part 2" with Vic Silayan, which launched her to full stardom . The 1976 film was directed by Philippine National Artist Ishmael Bernal.

From then on until the late '80s, Alma starred in a number of skin flicks that were big hits at the box-office. Thus, Moreno reigned as the "Sex Goddess of Philippine Movies" in the '70s and '80s.

She played Dyesebel in 1978.

slma moreno -dyesebel

Bernal also directed her in one of the best Filipino films of all time, "City After Dark". Her other notable films include "Makati Avenue Office Girls" and "Mga Bilanggong Birhen".

Versatile in sexy, drama and comedy films, Alma hosted a number of highly-rated television variety shows in the '80s for which she earned the title Shining Star. She also had a weekly television drama anthology, ALINDOG, a well-written drama exploring the lives of the modern Filipino women. Alma, who is also an excellent dancer, popularized a sexy, high-cut outfit called the “Tangga” in her TV shows like The Other Side of Alma, Rated A and Loveli-Ness. She has been nominated in various film and TV acting awards for her dramatic and comedic performances.

Ness, as she is fondly called in local show business, had a long live-in relationship with Action King Rudy Fernandez, with whom she has a son, Mark Anthony Fernandez, also an actor. She also figured in another high-profile live-in affair with the King of Comedy, Dolphy, which produced a son, Vandolph a former child actor.

Moreno later married actor-politician Joey Marquez. Their 12-year union produced three children: Yeoj, Win-win, VJ, and adopted Em-Em. The marriage was annulled in 2004.

In the first half of the new millennium, Alma Moreno divided her time between her professional commitments with GMA-7's "Habang Kapiling Ka" (daily tele-novela), and "Da Boy and Da Girl" (weekly sit-com); and her personal commitments to the less fortunate sectors of society in Paranaque, particularly the "kababaihan," for whom she undertakes various socio-civic and community development projects.

She ran for the mayoralty race of Paranaque City in 2004 but lost. Later that year, she starred in her comeback film "Kapalit". Recently, she sat as one of the resident judges of the defunct dance contest "You Can Dance".

In 2007, she was elected Councilor of the City of Paranaque.

SHERYL CRUZ

Sheryl Cruz

Sheryl Cruz<br />

Name: Sheryl Cruz
Nickname: Sheryl
Birthday: April 05
Birth Place: Makati City
Showbiz Anniversary: 1978

Full Name: Sheryl Rose Anna Marie Cruz-Bustos

She's the daughter of Rosemarie Sonora, the sister of Susan Roces and the matinee idol, Ricky Belmonte of the Cruz clan.

She is the niece of actress Susan Roces, widow of the 'King of the Filipino Movies' and presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr. She is the cousin of Donna Cruz, Geneva Cruz and Sunshine Cruz. She has a daughter named Ashley.

She went to St. Paul's College of Pasig during elementary. Finished High School education in OB Montessori Greenhills, and finished her Marketing degree in City College of San Francisco in California, U.S.A.

Acting career

Cruz started her career at a very young age. She won the FAMAS best child actress for her portrayal in the movie "Mga Basang Sisiw" opposite Janice de Belen, Che Che and the late Julie Vega. She also won best child actress for the movie "Roman Rapido" opposite her late uncle Fernando Poe Jr.

She was later contracted by Regal Films along with Kristina Paner and Manilyn Reynes to form the sensational "TRIPLETS". At that time, GMA Network established the youth oriented TV show "That's Entertainment" hosted by German Moreno, where she became part of the Wednesday group.

Her movie career blossomed as part of Philippine cinema's more memorable loveteams, that of herself and Romnick Sarmenta loveteam. Sheryl then signed a contract with Seiko Films. Sheryl was named during her teen years as "The Princess of the Philippine Movie".[citation needed]

She later married and moved to United States, only returning to Manila infrequently. However, Sheryl decided to return home, and starred in her comeback movie, Mano Po 3: My Love.

But her biggest break was starring on two Now and Forever seasons, Tining and Ganti, which gained high ratings despite its afternoon timeslot; and through Bakekang, which her villainous character became a household name.
