Alice Baby Smitjh aka Pamela Ponti

In the ‘60s, she was briefly known onscreen as Pamela Ponti, Italian-sounding when she’s actually an American mestiza, Alice ‘Baby’ Smith. Her acting career didn’t flourish as she fell in love with Dolphy (Rodolfo Vera Quizon), not yet the Comedy King that he is today.

Alice and Dolphy had three children: Ronnie, Eric and Donna Quizon.

She’s now based in California with daughter Donna. They own and run the popular franchise restaurant Pinoy/Pinay.

Vic Vargas

VIC VARGAS

Vic Vargas by Butch Francisco
July 22, 2003

Vic Vargas was the he-man and macho of Philippine movies. Born
Jose Maria Marfort Asuncion on March 28, 1939, he was a campus
heartthrob when he was taking up Commerce at the University of Sto.
Tomas. His ticket to fame was his physique. In fact, before he became
an actor, he first hosted a judo show on Channel 7 in 1961. Then came
the movies the following year. He played the title role in Diegong
Tabak with Lolita Rodriguez as his leading lady.

Then, together with Dolphy, he did the hilarious action-comedy
Tarzan vs. Tansan. They had two former Miss Philippines winners as
leading ladies: Josephine Estrada and Cynthia Ugalde.

Vic Vargas stayed with Sampaguita until the mid-‘60s, where he did
mostly action films: Ang Rosario at ang Tabak, Walang Takot sa
Patalim, Kumander Judo, Mga Kanyon ng Corregidor and Paratroops
Squadron.

From action, he shifted to sex flicks – actually bomba movies that
became the fad in the early ‘70s: Apoy ng Kaligayan with Stella Suarez
and Rosanna Ortiz; Busog with Merle Fernandez, Bert Leroy Jr. and
Philip Gamboa, Mister Incredible with Jessica, Rosanna Ortiz and Ricky
Santiago and Ang Bukid ay Basa with Gina Laforteza and Rosanna Ortiz.

But the majority of the films he did were really action or drama
laced with sex scenes: Mga Hagibis (no rleation to Sonny parsons and
his singing group) with Eddie Rodriguez and Eddie Garcia; Ako’y Tao,
May Dugo at Laman, an Armando Garces all-star cast drama with Rita
Gomez, Helen Gamboa, Perla Bautista, Leila Morena, Eddie Garcia, Eddie
Gutierrez, Leopoldo Salcedo and Ramil Rodriguez, Kapwa Limbas with
Roberto Gonzales and Rosanna Ortiz and Dodong Ko with Gloria Sevilla,
Perla Bautista, Anita Linda and Frankie Navaja Jr.

In 1971, he did his most important film – Pagdating sa Dulo, which
was also the first movie of Ishmael Bernal. Voted one of the best
films of the ‘70s by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, Pagdating
was a commentary on crass commercialism, materialism and the state of
the movie industry. Aside from Vargas (who played a taxi
driver-turned-movie actor), the movie also starred Rita Gomez, Eddie
Garcia and Elvira Manahan.

It was El Vibora, however, that gave him his first Best Actor
award (Manila Film Festival, 1972). Serialized in Liwayway, El Vibora
cast him as a bandit on the lookout for the man who raped his sister
and killed his family (It was Leopoldo Salcedo, a supposedly good
citizen of the community, who did it). El Vibora also starred Boots
Anson-Roa as his love interest.

The following year, he repeated his victory at the Manila Film
Festival for Nueva Vizcaya, where he played a warring Tarican. The
film also starred Zaldy Zshornack and was the launching movie of Miss
Republic of the Philippines, Evangeline Reyes.

In 1974, he also played leading man in the movie debut of another
beauty queen-turned-actress – Gloria Diaz, this time in Ang
Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa.

The other movies he made with the former Miss Universe were Amor,
An Affair in Tahiti and much later, Hayop sa Ganda with another Miss
Universe, Amparo Muñoz.

To show their versatility, Vargas and Diaz also tried comedy in
the Andres de Saya series.

The other significant movies he did were Pito ang Asawa Ko, Sinong
Kapiling, Sinong Kasiping?, Banta ng Kahapon, The King and the Emperor
and In Dis Korner which gave him an Urian Best Actor nomination.

On television, he also topbilled Lahi ni Adan on a round-robin
basis with Bert Leroy, Jr., Dindo Fernando and Jay Ilagan (All of
Vargas’ episodes were directed by Lupita Concio (now Kashiwahara).

And there was a time he also tried hosting Tawag ng Tanghalan
after the death of the original male host, Lopito (the hosting job
eventually went to Pugo).

Vic Vargas was also among the first batch of actors who joined the
Charismatic movement. A few years before he died, he also did his
share for the environment when he joined Bantay-Dagat in Palawan.

IMELDA ILANAN

photocredit: Video48
IMELDA ILANAN is the mother of Maricel Laxa, an actress and a known TV celebrity.
The father of Maricel Laxa is Tony Ferrer who is married to Alice Crisostomo.

From Sol Vanzi.

Imelda, now based in Shanghai, China, is in town to help her son, Misha, get a student visa.

"Mahirap kasing mag-apply ng student visa sa China if you are a resident of another country. E, hanggang ngayon even if we’ve been living in China for sometime, pawang mga holder pa kami ng Philippine visas," related Imelda.

Misha, now 20, is her only child with husband Ben Avanceña, now president of Johnson and Johnson in China, Taiwan and Korea.

Misha studies at the St. Louis University in Madrid, Spain, taking up a course in international communications. He would have wanted to take up theaters art in a university in London. "He took his entrance exams in both universities. Kaso, mas nauna siyang nakatanggap ng sagot from the university in Madrid," Imelda said.

Imelda will, likewise, take the opportunity to apply for a visa to Switzerland. Ben, according to her, is going there for a business conference and he wants her to accompany him.

"Unlike in the past when Misha was still studying in a school in China, ayaw na ni Ben na naiiwanan ako sa bahay namin sa China," said Imelda.

Like all residents of China, Imelda is excited about the coming Olympics, which will be held in Beijing. Johnson and Johnson happens to be a major sponsor. They were promised access to the event.

"It was Ben kasi who signed the contract for Johnson and Johnson," she reveled.

Ben Avanceña’s mother is Zenaida "Nini" Quezon-Avanceña, who is the daughter of the late Philippine President Manuel Quezon.

***

From Imelda, we also learned that her daughter, Maricel Laxa, now Mrs. Anthony Pangilinan, will soon finish her doctorate in Family and Child Development from the University of the Philippines.

Aside from writing a weekly column on family and child care in the Philippine Star, Maricel still occasionally appears on TV. She has several TV commercials. Two of her four kids also have their own product endorsements. One endorses a paracetamol and the other, a healthy drink for children.

Maricel’s husband, Anthony, is the younger brother of Senator Kiko Pangilinan..

December 19, 2004 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

FORMER actress Imelda Ilanan tried to turn down offers to do a film with Fernando Poe Jr. twice in the '70s, but the king of Philippine movies was "so persistent that I couldn't say no."

Imelda, one of the most beautiful faces in the late '60s, said FPJ used to visit her almost every day until she agreed to do the movie with him.

"He told me, 'you're the perfect actress for that role. I want you to do it and no one else.' How could you say no to someone like him?" said Imelda, in the home of her daughter, actress Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, in Quezon City.

Imelda said she did not want to do "Asedillo" in 1971 with FPJ because she had been four months pregnant with her second child, Melvin.

"I didn't want to commit to it because I knew we would be shooting on location and that I would have to travel far," Imelda explained. "Ayaw niyang pumayag. He said having a pregnant leading lady would bring him

good luck." (He would not take no for an answer.)

"Asedillo," directed by Celso Ad Castillo and now considered one of

local cinema's best movies, became a box-office hit in 1971. It also brought FPJ his second best actor award from the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (Famas) that same year.FPJ's first Famas best actor

award was for his performance in "Mga Alabok sa Lupa."

Topless scene

Imelda, who played Poe's third wife in "Asedillo," continued to shoot the movie until she was in her ninth month of pregnancy.

Imelda said she did not want to be part of the other movie, "Bontoc," also with FPJ as her leading man and directed by the late Pablo Santiago, because "I didn't want to go bold."

According to Imelda, she had to shoot two "difficult" scenes in "Bontoc." One scene required her to go topless while running on a beach, while the other required her to fight off a rapist.

Imelda said she was supposed to play FPJ's mother in the movie, which she did not like. "How could I play a mother to him?" she said. "I was just 27 when we did that movie, and Ronnie [FPJ's nickname] was way older than I. But Ronnie said I would only be part of the flashback

scenes.

"I'll never forget when he told me, 'if you're an actor, you could do anything,'" Imelda said. "He and Direk Pablo did well in convincing me [to do the movie]. Ronnie said we would buy a long wig to cover my breast while I'm doing the scene on the beach. Direk Pablo promised that

none of my private parts would be exposed during the rape scene.

No regrets

"I believed them, and the movie turned out well," she added. "I'm glad I did that movie. No regrets."

Imelda's first movie was "Geron Busabos, Batang Quiapo" in 1964, with FPJ's best friend, former President Joseph Estrada, in the title role.

Estrada produced the film, written by Augusto Buenaventura and directed by Chat Gallardo, under his JE Productions.

"I played my first lead role in that movie and Ronnie was our guest

star," Imelda recalled.

Imelda also worked with FPJ in "Dos Por Dos" and "Bato sa Buhangin." They were last seen together in "Mabuting Kaibigan, Masamang Kaaway" in 1991.

"Ronnie was a very generous man," she said. "He took care of his co-stars very well. Once, I asked for lechon de leche and he immediately sent one to the set. But he also made sure that the crew members were provided with the best food. Pantay-pantay ang treatment niya."

For eight years now, Imelda has been living in Singapore with her husband, Ben Avanceña, and her youngest child, Misha. The former actress arrived in Manila on Dec. 12, the day FPJ was rushed to the St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City, where the actor died on Dec. 14 just one

minute after midnight.

Imelda said she received a text message from her daughter Maricel's sister-in-law, Angeli Pangilinan-Valenciano, informing her of FPJ's condition.

"Angeli was asking that I pray for Ronnie's recovery," Imelda recalled. "I got nervous, but I didn't think it was that serious. I knew Ronnie to be a strong man. I thought he would eventually get better.

FPJ's neurologist, Dr. Abdias Aquino, said FPJ suffered a "severe brain attack" or stroke.

"When I heard of his death, I got depressed," Imelda added. "Ronnie was a true friend to many."

GEORGE ESTREEGAN

GEORGE ESTREEGAN

George Estregan was introduced in the movie, Sa Kamay ng mga Kilabot in 1965, with no less than his elder brother Joseph “Erap’ Estrada in the lead role. But it was in 1969 that Estregan was given some important roles. He was tapped to do several challenging roles in succession, all in a starring role in Eric, Jericho and Black Sheep.

He won the Famas Best Actor award in 1972 for the movie Sukdulan; Famas Best Supporting Actor in 1978 for Kid Kaliwete and Lumakad ka ng Hubad sa Mundong Ibabaw in 1981; FAP Best Supporting Actor for Sa Bulaklak ng Apoy in 1985.

Among his memorable movies were three of Ishmael Bernal movies: Huwag Pamarisan: Mister Mo Lover Boy Ko; Lumapit...Lumayo ang Umaga and Nunal sa Tubig. He also played the role of ace police reporter Ruther Batuigas in Pasukuin si Waway, a Rudy Fernandez starrer.

He was a consummate and accomplished performer, a versatile and talented actor. But his superb and awesome credential as a top rate actor was somewhat tarnished towards in the latter years of his career when he accepted roles that called for sex and nudity. He allowed himself to be used in several cheap and B-sex flicks, bordering to pornography.

FRED GALANG

FRED GALANG

BIOGRAPHY OF FRED GALANG

Fred Galang was one of the famous actors in the Philippines during his acting career. Fame, Fortune and Females, Fred had all these as a celebrity.

At the height of his success as an actor, director and producer, “I felt miserably deceived by my own knowledge of success,” Fred said. “I am elated with ideas of progression and charmed with my own vain philosophy, but grope in midnight darkness relative to true knowledge. Yes I had my learning experience but never came to the knowledge of the truth.” he declared.

In 1968, Fred appeared as a leading man of Charito Solis in "Igorota" and earned him to be Best Actor in a Supporting role in 7th Asian Film Festival, and also awarded as FAMAS' ‘Best Supporting Actor' in the same picture.

In 1969, Bangkok, Thailand after the Royal Command Performance of his film, "Ang Pulubi," The Royal Couple, Queen Sirikit and King Phumibul hosted a celebration in honor of Fred Galang.

The movie, ‘Ang Pulubi', was adjudged as the Best Picture of Asia in the 8th Asian Film festival which was held in Manila. Queen Sirikit praised the former actor by saying, “Your movie made me cry, you're really a good actor,” He also won Best Actor award in Manila Film Fest.

The once famous Filipino actor now famous 'Born Again' Minister had performed in drama, action and bold movies.

His desire to enter in acting career started when he was still in Grade IV (10 yrs. old). Since then he took every opportunity to enrich himself with experience.

He went to New York and worked as Liaison Officer of Philippine Mission to the United Nation. And during his spare time he visits 7 th Street Playhouse, a small actor's workshop in said city. There he learned the basic stage acting as a backstage worker.

After one year and six months he went back to Manila equipped with new experience and knowledge. He was then introduced as Daniel Gallego in a movie titled “13 Hudas”.

The eyes of the people started to be upon him, especially at his home town, Legaspi City , where he joined the cast of the film "Magtago ka na, Binata..." as one of the good guys.

When he started making a name in the industry, women became a part of his life. “I was involved with other women, but Nancy Kwan was a special one to me then... I love her so much, we had so many things in common.” he reminisced.

This intimate relationship led him not to go home on 3 consecutive Christmas in Manila.

His life became more complicated when he joined occult, ESP mind power and drugs, only to notice that his life is going no where. Emptiness created a vacuum in his heart, asking himself where is he headed to.

“When the mind has been long permitted to dwell only on earthly things, it is a difficult matter to change the habits of thought. That which the eye sees and the ear hears too often attracts the attention and absorbs the interest,” he said.

In the midst of all these conflicts and confusions in life, one day in one of his travels abroad, and he did travel a lot because he could already afford such luxuries in life being on top of his movie career, and in his pursuit of happiness the worldly way, he felt that traveling abroad would help him.

In one of the hotels that he was billeted in, he found a “book” that has all the answers to his questions in his mind. It was a copy of the Holy Bible which he later learned was placed by the Gideons, and the rest is history, he said.

LORETTA MARQUEZ

Loretta Marquez BIOGRAPHY

Loretta Marquez
Loretta Marquez
She was born Flordeliza King in 1945. Her mother was a Filipina and the father was an American. She was among those launched in Batch Stars 66 by the Sampaguita Pictures. Her launching movie was Morena Martir. She later quit showbiz to become a preacher and died of a weak heart in 1996.

When Star ’66 and movie actress Loretta Marquez, Flordeliza King in real life, died in 1996 not everyone knew she left behind a Catholic religious organization she herself built to honor and venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary and her son Jesus Christ.

Templo ng Katotohanan, a flock mostly from the vicinity of Malabon City and other parts of the metropolis, is proud of its origin as a cradle of Loretta’s legacy as a visionary and faith leader.

The former actress is being beatified by her followers. It’s not unusual as this was an activity common in the place where the Templo ng Katotohanan flourished when Loretta was still alive.

Is Loretta, who appeared saint-like during her time with Ricky Belmonte, Rosemarie Sonora, Pepito Rodriguez, Blanca Gomez, Bert Leroy Jr., Gina Pareño, Dindo Fernando, Ramil Rodriguez, and Shirley Moreno at the Sampaguita Pictures, now an object of idolatry?
