Biography of VILMA VALERA

Vilma Valera, the 1961 Miss Press Photography of the Philippines (PPP) second runner-up winner. She was 15 in 1960 when she was discovered by LVN character actor Alfonso Carvajal (Alma Concepcion's grandfather) and introduced in Bakit Ka Nagtampo? (directed by Tony Santos Sr.), topbilled by Nida Blanca and Nestor de Villa.

Her biggest break was in 1964 in the movie, Salambao with Eddie Rodriguez, Sylvia Gumabao and Van de Leon as her co-stars. she was versatile as an actress landing her in several roles in action, drama, comedy, musical with top actors at that time as her leading men (FPJ, Dolphy, Eddie Mesa, Eddie Gutierrez, among others).

Vilma Valera recorded several albums before her retirement from show business whose '60s hit songs included It Must Be Him and One Day. A Bicolana, Vilma is Vilma Johnson in real life, whose father was also American.

When LVN closed shop soon after, Vilma signed a contract with Larry Santiago Productions which loaned her to other companies.

"I really wanted to be a singer, so I joined a band. We would play in Asian cities, like Okinawa, and when came back I would do a movie or two. Then, alis uli kasama ng band. In one of those trips home, I did a few movies with Sampaguita (Way Out in the Country and Pogi with Eddie Gutierrez, among them). I did films with other companies, including Salambao for Zultana Productions."


She migrated to the US almost at the same time Miriam did. She married American Air Force commander Darrell Arthur Morrow in the early ‘70s by whom she has a son, 34, and a daughter, 31, both married with one child each.

"After my husband died 30 years ago, I did not work because my husband didn't want me to. He wanted me to just raise our kids. But I got bored so I started working with a financing company. After 10 years, I decided to retire."

Mila Ocampo was a 1959 Miss PPP winner. She appeared in Takdang Sandali with Amado Cortez, Gloria Sevilla and Von Serna whom she would later marry. Her daughter Snooky Serna also entered showbiz.

CYNTHIA UGALDE

CYNTHIA UGALDE BIOGRAPHY

picture of cynthia-ugaldeCynthia Ugalde was the 1961 Miss PPP winner. She appeared in Birds of Paradise, a film which also starred two other beauty queens—Josephine Estrada and Sylvia Gumabao-- was produced by Sampaquita Pictures.

She won several beauty titles such as (Miss Philippine Airforce 1957, Miss Education 1960 in UST, and the 1961 Miss Press Photography of the Philippines ). She was chosen as the Philippine representative to the 1962 Miss International pageant in Long Beach, California and went on to become the first Filipina to win a photogenic citation (she was 4th runner up in the miss photogenic round)in any international beauty pageant. Australia's Tania Verstak won most photogenic and eventually bagged the Miss International crown.

She joined the movie industry and was introduced in the film "Reynang Nakabakya" opposite the late Nestor de Villa. After several movies (Matang Lawin opposite the late Cesar Ramirez, Bathing Beauties, Birds of Paradise,Tansan vs Tarsan etc) she married Dr. Tan on December 17, 1965 and moved to the US after two years. Their eldest child, Camille, was born in 1970 and the youngest, Omar, was born in 1978. Cynthia studied in the New York School of Interior Design and John Robert Powers in Manhattan to broaden her knowledge. The couple returned to Manila mid 2004 to settle here for good.

Helen Gamboa—A 1961 first runner-up of the Miss Pres Phtography of the Philippines, she was introduced in Gorio and His Jeepney with co-star Chiquito under the Larry Santiago Productions. She also appeared in Banda Uno which was produced by Virginia Montes and a Darna movie which starred Vilma Santos and where she played an arch enemy villainess as a planet woman. She is the wife of ex-Senator Tito Sotto and the mother of Ciara Sotto.

She's the aunt of Sharon Cuneta. Sharon's mother Elaine Cuneta is her sister.

LILY MARQUEZ

Lily Marquez Biography




Lily Marquez was a nother Miss PPP (1958) winner. She appeared in Bon Voyage which was headlined by Fernando Poe, Jr. and Leonor Vergara, together with Bob Soler, Lani Oteyza, Eddie Mesa, Jose Romulo , Lauro Delgado and Lopito under the direction of Chat Gallardo for Premiere Productions Inc. Director Artemio Marquez discovered that she was perfect for playing the roles of villianess. She became the wife of actor Ronald Remy.

They have a daughter Jackie Kookooritchkin who became a TV host.

She died on march 10, 2007 from lung cancer.

Adorable Liwanag—Initially carrying the name Liwayway Liwanag, she was introduced in Seksing-Seksi with Aura Aurea in a film produced by Nolasco Productions. She also appeared in Juan Tamad Goes To Society with Manuel Conduc and Tessie Quintana for MC Productions. She won a Famas berst supporting actress award in Ako ang Katarungan, a Fernando Poe, Jr. film. She was a 1961 candidate for Miss PPP, the year Cynthia Ugalde won the title.
