Maria Carminia Lourdes Cynthia Gutierrez[1], better known as Chin Chin Gutierrez, is a Filipino actress and environmentalist.Her mother, 54-year-old former Franciscan nun who served in Italy, Cecilia, gave Gutierrez her birth name “Carminia,” which is the flower of the Sacred Heart, and her nickname “Chin-Chin,” which is Italian for “cheers.”

She starred as Maria Clara in National Artist Eddie Romero’s TV miniseries Noli Me Tangere in 1992, in acclaimed director Gil M. Portes’ Mourning Girls in 2005, and on the very popular ABS-CBN television drama Maging Sino Ka Man.

She also gained critical acclaim and international airplay with her album Uyayi: A Collection of Philippine Lullabies. She portrayed the title role in Ballet Philippines’ Darna.

She lost her mother in a fire that consumed their old house.

Twice awarded as one of the finest actresses in Asia, CHIN-CHIN GUTIERREZ has become equally renowned in the entire region for her work as an advocate for the environment. In 2003, she earned the distinction of being named one of Time Magazine’s “Asian Heroes”, appearing on the cover of this prestigious publication where she was cited for using her celebrity stature to further the cause of ecological awareness. She also received the 2004 The Outstanding Women in Nation’s Service (TOWNS) Award for environmental advocacy.



Today, she is a highly sought-after resource speaker and lecturer for Environmental Education, lending her expertise to a broad range of issues related to ecology and conservation, like Ecological Waste Management, Sustainable Development, Ecology and Spirituality, The Integrity of Creation, Sustainable Consumer Lifestyles, Women and the Environment, among others. Her talks have been attended not only by youth and NGOs, but also corporate and civic leaders, educators, local government officials and community workers.
