MIRIAM JURADO
Biography of MIRIAM JURADO
Miriam Jurado—Another Miss PPP finalist (in 1958), she appeared in James Bandong with comedian Chiquito who portrayed a secret agent.
"For a long, long time, I've been coming and going to the States," volunteered Miriam, "because since 1944 nandito na ang Tatay ko. My father, Francis Eisenman, was American so even if I was born in the Philippines, my citizenship has always been American. Jurado is my mother's surname. Her name was Concepcion and she used to appear in LVN movies as a mataba at matapang na tiyahin."
Miriam started as a child star at LVN Pictures, playing the little Lilia Dizon in Kandelerong Pilak. She was discovered by Lamberto Avellana. From 1957 to 1959, she did several LVN movies, most of them with Marita Zobel, Chona Sandoval, Luz Valdez and Lou Salvador Jr., and then she moved to Premiere Productions where she achieved stardom. Her first-starring picture was Pautang ng Langit, followed by those starring Eddie Mesa (Aawitan Kita, etc.), several costume pictures (Apat na Agimat, etc.) and dramas.
When she turned free-lancer, Miriam starred in action films, such as Ikaw O' Ako (in which she did an erotic love scene with Romeo Vasquez who left her lips bleeding from a passionate kiss).
"My most memorable film was Somewhere My Love, starring Eddie Rodriguez and Carmen Soriano. That's where their romance started. Maliit lang ang role ko pero markado."
She quit showbiz in the early '70s and has been living in Sacramento since then, working as a pharmacy-technician until she retired a few years ago, and is now leading a leisurely life. She never married.

CHRISTIAN BAUTISTA
Christian Joseph Morata Bautista was born in Imus, Cavite on October 19, 1981.
Christian Bautista, a runner-up in the Star's in a Million is a singing sensation in the Philippines. He has not only established a name for himself in the music scene in his home country, but also in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.
After winning the contest, he signed up with hit-making label Warner Music Philippines. With chart-topping hits like "Colour Everywhere," "Hands to Heaven," and “The Way You Look At Me,” Christian's fame soared and life was never the same again for the 24-year old Landscape Architecture graduate. Christian’s self-titled album reached Multi-Platinum status in the Philippines and Indonesia.
Christian’s “The Way You Look At Me,” is very popular in the Indonesia that it is getting frequent airplay in Indonesian radio stations. The song became an instant hit among the country’s young music lovers, even if they had yet to see the artist behind the ballad. The song, penned by American composers Andrew Fromm and Keith Follese, became so popular that record label Warner Indonesia decided to bring Christian there, to the great delight of the fans whose support for the Filipino singer has been steadily growing and even spreading to neighboring countries.
Last February 2006, Indonesia’s largest TV station, RCTI, aired “Completely — Christian Bautista,” the young balladeer’s first-ever Indonesian TV special. Christian performed with the biggest names in the Indonesian music scene — the famous 40-piece Magenta Orchestra, the young musical genius Andi Rianto, and the country’s two female divas, Krisdayanti and Titi D.J.

ARMANDO GOYENA
ARMANDO GOYENA
MOVIE actor Armando Goyena had to play a woman in the '50s before he could become a star.
The part was the title role in the 1953 comedy "Tiya Loleng" with Tessie Quintana, which was filmed at least three decades before Dustin Hoffman made "Tootsie" and Robin Williams played "Mrs. Doubtfire."
"They imitated us," Goyena chuckles. "The movie became a big hit, and that's how I made some money to marry."
Goyena, now 80, was married to Francisca Roses, also called Paquita, the first Camay soap model, with whom he had seven daughters and a son. Two of these daughters first became movie stars themselves-Maritess Revilla, who was also a soap model, and Tina Revilla, who later became a television host.
He has 28 grandchildren, four of whom have also become celebrities -- Bianca Araneta, her brother Carlo, Bernard "BJ" Palanca and his brother Mico.
A portrait of Paquita is prominently displayed in Goyena's suite in a condominium unit at the Ortigas Center. He gazes at his wife's face and sighs.
"She was beautiful," he says, almost in a whisper.
Paquita died from an obscure disease, whose name Goyena could not recall. He also could not recall exactly when she died, "oh, about four or three years ago," he says. How old was she when she died? "Let me see, she was 11 years younger than I am."
But he remembers how she suffered the pain of her ailment.
"She suffered. Four years of suffering. She was on a bed in that corner of this room." He points at a part of the suite where an antique cabinet holding his acting awards is now displayed.
"It's funny," he says. "All these awards came late in my life. I missed these when I was younger."
He has a total of five awards, mostly tributes from award-giving bodies that gave him recognition for his enduring popularity in an industry that thrives on youth power.
When asked for the names of his 28 grandchildren, he says, "Forget it." He tries to name his eight children, but starts to fumble with the sixth child, saying he has not seen her in 10 years because she lives in the States. He also refers to another daughter only as Mrs. Shultz.
"Why are you asking me these questions?" he blurts out.
Despite the memory lapses and the bags beneath his eyes, Goyena has the build of a 40-year-old man.
"I work out in the gym for two hours, twice a week," he says. "I have been doing this for six years, after I had two open-heart surgeries. I can lift free weights, but not sacks of rice. I have muscles in my arms and I am fit."
He thinks he's lucky he can still do many things, like run a restaurant in Makati and appear in the movies.
His latest role is in the December film fest movie "Captain Barbell," and he is anxious to learn his lines. This has become harder now, he admits, unlike when he played the title role of "Kapitan Kidlat" in 1953, the local version of Captain Marvel.
"It was very different then," he says.
The difference in the movie industry then was the studio system as opposed to the star system of today.
"There was no jealousy among us contract stars," he says. "We were all good friends."
He recalls that as a contract star of LVN, he was part of a big family. He was paid a salary, and a bonus if his movie made money, like "Tia Loleng."

FERNANDO POE, JR., RIP
FERNANDO POE, JR
He was born on August 20, 1939 in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, Philippines as Ronald Allan Poe ; of Spanish, Filipino, and Irish-American extraction, the son of actor-producer Fernando Poe, Sr. and Elizabeth Kelley.
Poe Jr.'s parents were not legally married yet when he was born in 1939. They were married in 1940 only. He was the second of six siblings, born after Elizabeth and before Fernando (Andy), Genevieve (Jenny), Fredrick (Freddieboy), and Evangeline.
Filipino actor Conrad Poe was his half-brother, the illegitimate son of the late Fernando Poe Sr. by actress Patricia Mijares.
The original family surname was spelled Pou from his grandfather, playwright Lorenzo Pou, a Catalan migrant from Majorca, Spain, who ventured into mining and business in the Philippines.
His mother's parents, Arthur Kelley (WWI Army Corp of Engineer from Iowa, USA) was an Irish American who settled in the Philippines and Martha Gatbonton, a Filipina of mixed heritage.
Poe graduated from primary education in 1953 at San Beda College. He attended high school in San Sebastian College, Mapua Institute of Technology, and University of the East. After the death of his father, he dropped out of the University of the East in his sophomore year in order to work to support his family.
He worked in the Filipino film industry as a messenger boy, and was given acting roles in subsequent years.
As a young actor, he had small parts in several movies made by his father, Fernando Poe, Sr.
Starting as a stuntman for Everlasting Pictures, he was given a break and landed his first starring role in the movie Anak ni Palaris (Son of Palaris) at the age of 14. The movie was not a big hit. In 1957, the movie Lo Waist Gang made him popular, and the film was such a big hit that low-waist pants became a fad.
Known also as FPJ from his initials, Poe acted in a number of movies which depicted him as the champion of the poor and downtrodden. He also directed nine movies, under the pseudonym Ronwaldo Reyes. Reyes originated from the surname of his paternal grandmother, Martha.
He established FPJ productions in 1961 and later organized other film companies such as D'Lanor, JAFERE, and Rosas Productions. In 1963, he and Joseph Estrada testified against criminal gangs who extorted money from the film industry. In 1965, he shared the lead in The Ravagers, a film depicting the United States and the Philippines working together against Japanese war time occupation. The film is considered one of the most influential Filipino films, and it helped establish Fernando Poe, Jr.'s status as a movie icon.
Poe became an award-winning actor and garnered the most best actor awards at the FAMAS. Among the movies that received awards were Mga Alabok ng Lupa (1967), Asedillo (1971), Durugin si Totoy Bato, Umpisahan Mo, Tatapusin Ko (1983), and Magnum 357 (1987).
Poe was dubbed as the "Da King" of Philippine movies because of his box office hits. He made over 200 films in his lifetime and ran a successful movie production firm. Among his famous movies include the Ang Panday series, Kahit Konting Pagtingin, Dito sa Pitong Gatang and Aguila. His last movie was Pakners which also stars 9-ball billards champion Efren "Bata" Reyes.
He married actress Susan Roces in a civil ceremony in December 1968. They were later married in a church and among their primary sponsors were then President Ferdinand Marcos and First Lady Imelda Marcos. Mary Grace was their only child, an adopted one.
Although a well-known public figure, Poe had been very reclusive about his personal life. However, in February 2004, during the presidential campaign, Poe admitted to having sired a child out of wedlock. Ronian, or Ron Allan, was Poe's son by former actress Anna Marin. A daughter by the name of Lovi Poe is now a singing sensation.

SUSAN ROCES
SUSAN ROCES BIOGRAPHY
Jesusa Sonora was born on July 28, 1941 in the Philippines in Bacolod. She has reigned as Queen of the Philippine Movies and the widow of Ronald Allan Kelley Poe, popularly known as Fernando Poe, Jr.
Susan Roces—She was introduced in Boksingera where she co-starred with comedy king Dolphy. Then films came one after another, including Handsome. Mga Anghel ng Lansangan (with Jose Mari), The Big Broadcast (with Amalia Fuentes), Prinsesang Gusgusin, Sa Hardin ng Diyos, Bandana and Maruja (both with Romeo Vasquez). She appeared in many films with reel and real life husband Fernando Poe Jr. These included Ang Daigdig Koy Ikaw, Pilipinas Kong Mahal, Langit at Lupa, Divina Grasya, Salaginto’t Salagubang, Sorrento and Karnabal. The couple also poularized the box-office series of Manager-Kumander films.
Her sister, Rosemarie Sonora, and niece Sheryl Cruz, are also actresses.
Following the death of her husband in 2004 at the age of 65, Roces became a rallying point for the political opposition in the Philippines.
In June 2005 she was one of the key figures calling for the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. In a fiery speech, she claimed that "She stole the presidency not once, but twice!"
Tama na ang once, no more twice.

Susan turns 65 today

Susan Roces
SUSAN Roces, who's celebrating her 65th birthday today • Happy Birthday! • is back on screen in the new ABS-CBN 2 sitcom John En Shirley, where she plays Maricel Soriano's mom-in-law, Encarnacion or En.
We've seen its pilot episode as megged by topnotch director Bert de Leon and it's wholesome entertainment for the entire family.
The original John & Marsha ran for 17 years.
In this spinoff, Marsha has passed away and the scene where Dolphy as John talks to the photo of the late Nida Blanca is very touching. We saw both Susan and Marya crying as they watched the show.
Marya as Shirley is now married to newcomer Richie Macapagal (a TV and print ad model who auditioned for the sitcom) and they have two kids, Janna Baker and Ivan Da-vid. The program opens with John saying goodbye to the plane his son Rollie took to move to the US with his family. Shirley then takes him home to live with her husband and in-laws. En is married to Noel Trinidad, a henpecked husband, who doesn't talk when she is around and opens his mouth only when she's away.
What made Susan accept John En Shirley?
"I was both excited and nervous when producer Kitchie Benedicto offered me the show," she says. "Excited, as I was a follower of the show [John & Marsha], but also nervous and hesitant, as I'm wondering if I will be a credit to the new show. But after taping the first episodes with the cast, I'm now proud to be in it and it's an honor to be working again with Dolphy, who taught me how to do comedy in my first starring role, Boksingera Daw. It's also nice to work with Marya again, with whom I did Inday Sa Balitaw. I like my role as it's complex. Hindi siya todo-todong mabait, may pagkamataray rin, suplada at mahilig magbigay ng unsolicited advice without knowing she hurts the feelings of John."
The pilot episode's ending gives you a sense of deja vu as it ends with En, assuming the Donya Delilah role, telling John: "Magsumikap ka."
How does she think FPJ would react to her accepting the show?
"I really believe that Ronnie has something to do with me being offered this show. He wants me to work and be busy again. I never expected they'd offer the role of En to me, but I think after going through some hard times, it's time for me, for us, to laugh again."
Noel Trinidad says never in his wildest dreams did he think that he'd one day be paired with Susan, a movie queen, and even play her husband.
"That's why there was no reluctance for me when they offered me the role," he says. "I said okey lang kahit walang dialogue, na tinotoo naman nila."
John En Shirley starts airing this Saturday after Komiks.

Melanie Marquez
Mimilanie Laurel Marquez was born on July 16, 1964 and became a Miss International for the year 1979.
She is from Mabalacat, Pampanga and one of the daughters of the late director, Artemio Marquez. After winning the beauty crown, she went on to to pursue a career in modelling and show business, where she uses her nickname Melanie as a screen name. She has been active as an actress, TV host, film producer, and most recently, as a celebrity endorser.
In addition to being Ms. International 1979, Melanie was also the Face of the 80s winner in New York in 1985, was first runner-up in the Supermodel competition in 1986, and was the Most Glamorous Woman in Italy, also in 1986. In 2005, she also competed in the Mrs. World pageant.
Melanie also continues to coach girls internationally in pageants, often making appearances at local ones; her most recent noted appearances included the Binibining Pilipinas World of BC 2004 pageant, and the Binibining Pilipinas World of Canada pageant, 2004. She was voted as the Most Beautiful Miss International in 2000.
Melanie had been to hell more times than what were probably enough for one lifetime. Before Adam, she already had four children from three husbands-Manuelito, 21, from action star and Pampanga Governor Lito Lapid; Mazen, 13, from an Arabian businessman; and Maxene Xuxa, 11, and Michelle Zarah, 8, from actor Derek Dee.
The twists and turns in her colorful life could shame those of a telenovela with the most convoluted script.
According to Melanie, "The most difficult part was when everything seemed to conspire against her.
Her ex-husband wanted her in jail. She said she was afraid, she'd lose custody over her two daughters. She had to run away with them and entered the US through the Mexican border because one of them didn't have valid papers.
His eldest son Manuelito rebelled against her. She had to flee to another country to lick her wounds and reassess her life.

Her films have been showcased in numerous international film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Moscow, New York and Hawaii. On screen, she has starred with the leading men of her time, including Joseph Estrada, who became the country’s president in 1998.
Among the notable films are:
HIMALA
A story about a visionary, Himala was the first and only Filipino film ever to qualify in the Competition Section of the Berlin International Film Festival (1983).
Aunor carries the distinction of hosting the longest-running musical variety show in Philippine television. Her show "Superstar" ran for almost two decades.
Also known in the Philippines as "Ate Guy", she acquired a following of fans known as Noranians, whose devotion to their idol was only matched by the fans of her contemporary Vilma Santos (known as Vilmanians). Although the rivalry between Noranians and Vilmanians remained mostly friendly, there have been times when clashes occurred in the streets of Manila.
A mother of five, her marriage to another multi-awarded local actor, Christopher de Leon, was annulled in the late 1990s.
In 2002, Aunor made her first TV show in decades and her first soap opera, entitled, Bituin, opposite Philippine's premier villain, Cherie Gil, aired on ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network.
Although she retains her Philippine citizenship, Aunor has spent much of her time in recent years in California, where she has a home.
Aunor was arrested on March 30, 2005 when airport screeners at Los Angeles International Airport stopped her on her way to Oakland, California and allegedly found 7.7 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride (known in the Philippines as shabu} in her carry-on bag, and a glass pipe wrapped in a T-shirt. The day following her arrest, Aunor was released after posting a $10,000 bail. At the reading of the charge against her on April 21, she pleaded not guilty. The trial has been set for December 16, 2005.
On March 29, 2006 Aunor changed her plea to guilty to the charge of possession of a controlled substance. She entered a drug-diversion program and subsequently the criminal proceedings against her have been suspended while she is in the program. The charges against her are expected to be dropped once she completes her rehabilitation.

A handsome hunk with features that made him look a bit like the late actor Chistopher Reeve, Miguel Rodriguez gave Richard Gomez a run for his money. Actually, the two were once together in the sitcom "Palibhasa Lalake" with Joey Marquez completing the wackiness.
Miguel was leading man material, paired opposite the likes of Sharon Cuneta and Snooky Serna. In 1989, he even had three leading ladies in the movie inspired by a popular song, "Si Aida, Si Lorna o Si Fe".
Although not as in-demand in the mid-90's as he was in the late 80's, Miguel was still one of the hot guys, appearing in Dawn Zulueta starrer "The Maggie Dela Riva Story" (1994) and Kris Aquino's "Saan Ako Nagkamali" and His last movie was "Huwag Mong Isuko ang Laban" (1995).
Mstery remains to cloak the death of actor and once-upon-a-time politician Miguel Rodriguez whose to His Gunshot body was discovered last February 7, 1998 by household help inside his house in BF Homes Internal Village, Talon, Las Piñas City.Speculations are running high on the real cause of the actor's death. A certain Bernadette Puno, who claimed to be a cousin of Rodriguez, said the actor died due to "collapsed pancreas."

JUDY ANN SANTOS
Her name is Judy Anne Lumagui, better known by her screen name Judy Ann Santos. She was born on May 11, 1978.
She starred in the GMA's tearjerker Kaming Mga Ulila directed by Argel Joseph in 1986. She also starred in the soap opera headliner in IBC-13's Ula, Ang Batang Gubat.
She appeared as child star in Mother Lily's Regal Films and other independent film outfits.
It was in Mara Clara where she gained popularity with Glady Reyes as the villainess.
It lasted for five years and produced the Juday-Wowie tandem.
Juday's first lead movie role under the direction of Boots Plata, Star Cinema finally took notice and offered Juday her first movie under the production outfit - appropriately a movie version of Mara Clara was a hit.
When ABS-CBN wanted to start featuring young artists as headliners in their Star Drama Theater Presents anthology, Juday was the pioneer. To this day, she holds the distinction of being the only young star that was featured three times (four episodes each). In 1999, Juday was given her own Judy Ann Drama Special anthology after Esperanza ended. Despite the word drama in the title, she actually tackled a variety of roles, shifting from drama to comedy to action to horror to fantasy and back to drama.
Juday is a four-time recipient of the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation award.
Her love tandem with Wowie de Guzman produced 12 films. Rico Yan also became a screen partner but not for long.
In Esperanza, the new love team of Piolo Pascual was born.
Juday continued to enjoy the best of both worlds. She became a most-sought after leading lady - teaming up with the likes of Mark Anthony Fernandez (1997's Ako Ba Ang Nasa Puso MO? directed by Jose Javier Reyes), Jao Mapa (1997's Babae directed by Lupita Kashiwahara), Onemig Bondoc (1998's I’m Sorry My Love directed by then first-time filmmaker Joyce Bernal), Carlo Munoz (2001's Luv Txt directed by Rowell Santiago), Bong Revilla (2000's Minsan Ko Lang Sasabihin directed by Danilo P. Cabreira) and Cesar Montano (1997's Sanggano directed by Toto Natividad). She also became the other-half of another love team. After a supporting role in 1999's Metro Manila Film Festival entry Esperanza directed by Jerry Lopez Sineneng, Piolo Pascual earned leading man status together with Leandro Munoz in Kahit Isang Saglit (2000, directed by Gilbert Perez). Sans a love triangle, it was just Juday and Piolo sweating it out in the boxing ring of love in Bakit 'Di Totohanin (2001, directed by Boots Plata). Both movies passed the 100 Million peso mark despite the prevailing industry slump back then.
Nobyo niya si Ryan Agoncillo at balak nilang magpakasal sa madaling panahon.
